Ed Paynter Fall 2007 Soon after we moved to Greene County in 2007, I read that a little girl had been murdered in Marion County by one of the people with whom she had been placed for foster care. I was angry, and I thought about how I would feel had it been one of my grandkids who currently live in Florida and Germany. I only see them a few days at a time so I decided to fill the gap by becoming a CASA and looking out for other kids. Though it's only one or a few at a time, I'm happy I can advocate for kids and help their families.

Georgette Powell I have been a CASA for about a year, now. I was previously employed with DCS as a child protection investigator in Marion County. I have worked in Greene, Putnam and Sullivan Counties. I have been a foster parent also. I am retired and chose to become involved with CASA because CASAs give children a voice. I enjoy working with children and I also enjoy sitting on the "other side of the room" in children's court. I hold degrees in psychology and child development. I have two wonderful sons who are grown and on their own.

Mary Ison Spring 2006 Originally from Baltimore, MD, I settled in Greene County, Indiana, in 1980. I raised my children while working full-time and divorced shortly after starting classes at Ivy Tech State College. One of my first college classes in 2000 required a report on a community service organization. A couple of good friends of mine were involved in the CASA program, so I interviewed them and Beverly Haynes, who was the CASA Director at the time. In 2005, one of my final college classes was a public speaking class; my final speech was an appeal for my classmates to become involved with CASA in their counties. When I went back to Beverly to update my information, I picked up an application to become a volunteer. In April 2006, I was appointed as a special advocate and I am still on my first case in 2009. I remarried in 2004 to a wonderful man, who also became a CASA in October 2007. Although the case I'm involved in is sometimes heart wrenching, I do feel my efforts have made a difference in this child's life and pray for the day he is part of a forever family of his own.

Sandy Miles Fall 2007 A couple of years ago, I retired and moved to Greene County with my husband. One of the first things we did was to look for a group where we could contribute to our new community. I am a mother and grandmother, and spent most of my professional career working with children. The CASA program provided the training to help me use those skills to advocate for children who have been caught in unfortunate circumstances not of their making. The support staff is fabulous and always ready to help me with any questions. I have always felt I was a full member of the team that is working with these families and have had good cooperation from community members from whom I need to gather information.
The adults involved in these cases all have their own advocates through their lawyers. It is important that the children have their own advocate, too. I am proud that CASA allows me to serve in that capacity. |
Selena Kingsley Fall 2010 Website & Facebook Admin Two quotes can explain why I became a CASA far better than I can. "If you want to make the world a better place, take a look at yourself and then make a change" - Man in the Mirror lyrics "Be the change you want to see in the world" - Mahatma Gandhi

Shirley Hughes A few years ago I was looking for a way to make a difference in my community, so I became a Court Appointed Special Advocate in 2006. Since then I have enjoyed working with children and their families in Greene County. It’s wonderful to help a child through a difficult time, but it’s even better if I can help a family become stronger. I work full time at Indiana University in Bloomington. I enjoy spending time with my children and grandchildren, and I also love taking long walks with my two best pals, KatyBird & Evie.

Tommy Teddy Bear I have been helping the CASA program since 2008, though I can only help one day a year, near Valentine's Day. (Usually I don't get up until March.) Some of the kids are afraid of me but most like me. We hug a lot. We take pictures together at the Teddy Bear Tea each year. The kid on my lap in this picture is a little bigger than most of them.
